Adventures of Rafah Crossing Demonstration

Iman Badawi- (10-8-2008) - Rafah Crossing

Today, Sunday August 10th is the international day to lift the siege on Gaza. 4 demonstrations took place to remark this day.

One in Gaza, one in Scotland and two in Egypt. In Egypt, there was one in Cairo and another at Rafah crossing, and I was present at Rafah crossing.

9 women, 4 children and 6 men took 3 taxis to the Rafah crossing but were soon stopped by the police.

Among the several check points the police officers at the last one of "Al Masoura" dealt harshly with the people, took some of the banners and even snatched the Egyptian flag from us.

We decided that we'll go through back roads to escape the police siege, just like the Palestinians do with the Israeli check points at the west bank.

The taxis had to get us off away from the crossing and we walked about 3km to reach the crossing.

When we went there the police at the crossing were astonished that we made it, but were very polite. They just asked who we were and where are we working especially the reporters. We made it even if we were few people. We wanted to send a message to the world and to our brothers in Gaza that we're with them against the unfair siege imposed on them both by the Arabs, especially Egypt and by the west with its double standard policy.

How come that the whole world is watching the people in Gaza dying silently!! 236 are dead because of the siege until now. Has the world become such an inhumane, unsafe and intolerable place to live in? I'd say yes!!
